New Year’s Resolution… Get Organized

It is so worth it…

How many times have you had a New Year’s Resolution to get organized? Never, once, every year?! New Year’s Resolutions can either be aspirational goals we set for ourselves, or empty promises that don’t get accomplished. Let 2023 be the year that you fully commit to getting yourself organized!

I don’t set a New Year’s Resolution every year, only when I’m feeling super inspired or when I see that I need to make a shift in some aspect of my life. I have some work and personal goals in mind that I’m thinking about making official New Year’s Resolutions this year. I’m pretty excited to put the time and effort into to making them happen for myself.

I have a few criteria when I set New Year’s Resolutions: can I actually accomplish it, will it make my life measurably better, and it can’t drive me crazy trying to get it done. Who’s with me?!

Getting organized can feel like a lofty resolution after the chaos of the holidays and all the added stuff that is now residing in your home thanks to Christmas. But it is SO WORTH IT! Plus, it checks off all of my important resolution requirements - it is completely attainable, it will make your life measurably better, and hopefully won’t drive you crazy (especially if you hire someone to do it for you, wink, wink).

Remember that getting and STAYING organized is a state of mind. You can buy all sorts of product hoping it will make you organized, but if you’re not ready to tackle the problem, you’ve just added a lot of expensive clutter to an already cluttered space. So let’s set a few ground rules to help you achieve your New Year’s Resolution:

  • Fully commit - If you’re not in the right state of mind, you probably won’t be able to put in the time and effort to make it to the finish line.

  • Start small - if you have a lot of spaces to tackle, start small. Open that coat closet door and start with that. Give yourself a confidence boost and inspiration to start the pantry or your personal closet. Once you see the results of your coat closet you’ll be so happy and want to keep going, promise!

  • Get rid of unwanted items - the only way to truly make space is to get rid of the items that are cluttering it up. We all hold on to things that we don’t want, no longer use, and sometimes that we don’t even like. Letting them go can be hard, but it is so worth it when you realize how much space these things take up. Make room for what you truly love!

  • Don’t buy organizing products until you know what will stay! I see this all the time. Someone wants to get organized and goes out and buys half the stock of the Container Store. While it’s fun to buy products, you don’t know what you really need until you assess what’s going to stay in the space. Only then can you pick out the right product for those items to live in.

  • Put it back together - once you’ve gotten rid of the clutter and found container homes for the remaining items, you get to put it back! This is the fun part, when you see the results of all your hard work. Time to celebrate!

  • Ask for help - If you feel like you’ve bitten off more than you can chew once you’re knee deep in closet and pantry items, ask for help! Who said New Year’s Resolutions had to be a solo effort?
