Holiday Organizing, already?!
It’s that time of year when it feels like time is just flying by!
“OMG, school just started, that means Halloween is tomorrow, Thanksgiving next week, and Christmas the day after that!!” All the demands on us start to pile up and it can get overwhelming. Fast.
At least you don’t have to worry about your holiday decor. Right?! Oh, wait, where is it?!!
Organizing for the holidays can feel like packing up to move, but without all the packing tape. Here are a few tips to get you going, fix your current system, or just plan on doing the next time you have a rainy day and want to get yourself organized.
Bins are your friend - Measure your storage/shelf space so that you can pick up the largest bin size to maximize your storage and so the bins actually fit!
Separate and Color Code each holiday - I give each holiday it’s own bin (or two) and then color code the storage containers. It makes it super easy to see which bins need to be pulled out at a glance. Halloween is purple, Christmas is red/green, Birthday items are pink (I have two girls)… you get the idea.
If your bins are in a more visible location (like the garage), or you simply like the look of uniform bins best, make sure to label! Nothing’s worse than having to pull out each bin to see what’s inside. Take the guess work out of locating what you need by labeling, labeling, labeling! And keep each holiday’s bins next to each other.
Costume Storage - Who said you need to hang all the Halloween costumes? They can fit nicely in a bin, too! You can use small vacuum storage bags to keep each costume with it’s accessories, then store them lined up within the bin, almost like lining shorts up in your drawer! Again, LABEL each one so you can grab them at a moments notice. If hanging is your thing, use garment bags or hanging vacuum bags to keep dust off and again, LABEL!
Wrap delicate items - Particularly for Christmas storage, use packing paper or bubble wrap to ensure your items don’t break in the bins. No one wants their cherished heirlooms in pieces. There are certain items that I keep in their original packaging to really protect them (I’m talk to you, my German nutcracker, that I’ll never get another of if it breaks!).
Bulky Items - We all have them, the items that will never fit into a bin. What do you do with those?! Large storage duffel bags can really save the day. If you make sure each bag is the same color, there’s intention behind it and it won’t look cluttered.
Storage racks - If you have the room, storage racks are your best friend! They lift your bins and bulky items off the ground, make them easier to access, and utilize wall space. Invest in metal ones, if you can. They’ll last forever!
