Get your Closet in Order

It’s important that our closets serve us well.

It feels like I’ve been living and breathing closets this month. And I love it!

There is no better space to organize than a closet. It’s a space that you use every single day, you're pulling items in and out, it needs to work for you. If it isn’t serving you well, than it’s time to fix the problem!

Here are a few pro tips to help you get your space in order. I live by these rules and use them in virtually every closet that I organize. Try them and start feeling good about your closet!

Uniform Hangers

If there is one tip that you take away from this, it’s to use the same style hanger for every item in your closet. Whether it’s plastic, velvet or wood, the appearance of uniformity that this brings is transformational.

Designate an area for shoes

If you don’t have a built-in shoe storage system, designate one area of your closet for all the shoes to live in. As with any other room, if you have the similar items in one place, you’ll know what you have and actually use it! There are a bazillion different ways to organize your shoes - floor racks, over the door racks, clear bins, boxes… You name it, a shoe has been put in it.

Organize items by type

What I’ve found to work best is sorting by clothing type and then by color. Put all your dresses in one section, pants in another, and so on. Within each section I like to break it down further by color: whites to the left, then creams, pinks, reds… ROYGBIV to your hearts content!

Use containers strategically

I use baskets and clear bins depending on the height of placement and what’s inside the container. For memory boxes or sentimental items, I like the look of linen. These are items you’re not accessing on a regular basis and don’t need to see what’s inside. Plus the lid will keep dust out! For larger storage I’ll use a woven basket and small clutches or wallets will be placed in a clear bin. If I can’t see the item over the edge of the basket, rule of thumb is to use a clear container. If you can’t see it, it might as well not be there, right?

And make sure to LABEL, LABEL, LABEL!

Use wall space

We often forget that our walls are begging us to use them. Place hooks for a robe, hang your hats, use key hooks for jewelry display. There are so many ways to utilize a blank wall that will make your closet serve you better.

Purse storage

When you don’t have the space to display purses, you can hang them on purse hooks, place them in clear bins or baskets, use a hanging purse organizer… like shoe storage there are so many ways to do it. I love to have a favorite purse or two displayed on a shelf (acrylic risers are a good way to create height), while the others are on purse hooks or in a hanging organizer.
