Hat Storage 101

We all have hats, but how do we store them?

I know, I know, it may not seem like there’s enough to write about when it comes to hat storage. But, oh, how there is!

Hats are the kind of item that we need (hello sun protection!), we use, and even collect. But what is the best way to keep them from getting dusty, to store the collectibles, to even make sure we wear them?

Here are a few tips on how I’ve stored hats in the past. I’m sure you’ll find one or two that will solve your hat storage issues.

Wall Hooks

I love a good Command Hook. You can put them almost anywhere, they’re clear and practically invisible, and you can move them around - what’s not to love?! Creating a hat gallery wall is always a win - you can see what you’ve got AND make sure you use each and every one. Plus, it utilizes empty wall space. I’m a HUGE fan of using walls, the untapped space you didn’t even know you had.

When hanging larger hats, make sure to measure the depth of the hook you’ll need. A rancher hat or fedora may have an extra deep brim that won’t hang on your typical command hook.

Hat Racks

Hat racks are another great way to store hats that are used frequently. They make it easy to grab-and-go and to see what you’ve got. I used this chrome version in a garage, but there are so many materials for hat racks that you can use them anywhere - closet, mudroom, entry way…

Hanging Storage

If you don’t have a ton of wall or shelf space, use hanger space or the back of door to hang hats. The hanger version allows hats to slip into the closet without taking up a ton of space. The back of the door rack can also hang from your hanger rod, giving you flexibility with placement - win, win!

Containers

For those of us that collect hats or have great memories wearing a certain one and aren’t ready to part with it, creating a hat storage solution that also doubles as a sort of memory box can be the way to go. Containers with lids will keep the dust off, while clear plastic allows you to see which hats are in there. And label, label, label what’s inside.

The ever-versatile water hyacinth baskets at Container Store are great for more frequently used hats. Line them up and pull the basket down when you need to access or grab one. Plus it looks fabulous on the shelf!
